Splash into Summer!

Just because you don’t own a summer house on a lake doesn’t mean you can’t have the same "summer-house-on-the-lake" experience this year.

Book Tamarack Resort’s "Summer Splash" package and enjoy lazy days on Idaho’s Cascade Lake and cozy nights in your own private home. Choose the lodging best suited for your getaway and pair it with either a four-hour luxury pontoon boat rental, a run-about boat with tube and rope, or a credit toward any other marina rental.

Prices start at $183 per guest, per lodging night, based on five-person occupancy in an Estate Home, and are valid June 27 - August 31, 2008.

For more information on this and other Tamarack packages, call (866) 649-6903 or visit Tamarack’s Web site by clicking here.

Hypoxia in Hawaii?

Who knew that Hawaii was home to some of the biggest mountains in the world? And who would have guessed that a Colorado girl like me, who’s used to living at 6,000 feet, would have been the only person to suffer from hypoxia at the top of one of them? (To make matters worse, everyone else was from New York and L.A. — oh, and Cincinnati, too.)

Here’s the story: I signed up for the Mauna Kea Summit & Stars Adventure, led by Hawaii Forest & Trail, which is by the way, one of the best guide services I’ve encountered.

After a few hours of getting tossed around on the bumpy road—Saddle Road is the name and most rental car contracts forbid you to take it— leading up to the 13,796-foot-high summit (can you believe that? If you measure the mountain from its base, it’s more than 33,000 feet high!) we reached the top, just in time for the sunset. We stayed at the top for a while, marveling at the giant, building-size telescopes perched there (shown at top left), and watched as the International Space Station flew overhead. And, this was really cool: Take a look at the second picture from the top. That’s not another mountain, it’s the shadow of Mauna Kea. If you look really closely, you can see me waving.

Then, the hypoxia set in. It’s really just a shortage of oxygen, not really a big deal and pretty common at that height, but still, I was pretty disappointed in myself.

So, before our driver succumbed too, we all piled back into the van and headed down to 9,000 feet, where we set up telescopes and took in the night sky, including an amazing full moon. Here’s an interesting fact: Mauna Kea is a coveted stargazing spot, because from there, one can see the entire northern hemisphere sky, and 80 percent of the southern hemisphere. The Southern Cross was in clear view.

Now, if this sounds like a lot of fun to you, visit www.hawaii-forest.com and check out the details of this adventure and many more. The Kilauea Volcano adventure is pretty cool too, especially now, as the volcano is active.

Summer Deals at the Four Seasons

You don’t have to twist our arm to get us to stay at a Four Seasons property. The rooms are luxurious, the cuisine to die for, and the service, well, it’s second to none. But alas, a stay can sometimes require a twist (or a complete wringing-out) of the wallet.

Well, this summer, many Four Seasons properties are offering deals that will make it a little bit easier to get the summer vacation you’ve been dreaming of. There are three offers to choose from:

  • Stay Longer offers a complimentary night
  • Experience More features a hotel or resort credit
  • Bed and Breakfast includes daily breakfast for two

Next, you’ll have to decide where you want to go. Each property offers one incentive, so log on to www.fourseasons.com to check them out.

May we offer a few suggestions? Choose Jackson Hole and you’ll be lounging in bed, sipping a mimosa in the shadow of the Tetons in no time. Or score a precious extra day in Whistler or Vancouver (Can’t decide? They’re pretty close together, so why not visit both?).
